SITAR - (Sih-Tar) is a stringed instrument used to play classical Indian music called Ragas. The Sitar is like a long-necked lute made of wood. The lower end is a gourd which is a sound box. It has 6 or 7 main strings and 12 to 20 sympathetic strings. The main strings are plucked with the right hand while the sympathetic strings vibrate when the main strings are played. There are 16 to 20 adjustable metal strips called frets and are attached to the neck of the instrument to serve as a buide to the left hand. Ravi Shanker, an Indian musician, is ranked as the world's most famous sitarist.
